„Čia prasideda tėvynės rytas“, – romantiškai tvirtinama reklaminiuose stenduose, vaizduojantys galios vertikalę nuo Ramiojo vandenyno iki Baltijos jūros. Tačiau daug amžių, praleistų saloms kolonizuoti, ir metodai, naudojami saloms kolonizuoti, nei Sachalino, nei Kurilų salos nepadarė „mūsų Australija“, nors abiem atvejais žemę vienu metu kolonizavo nuteistieji. Kodėl sunkiųjų darbų Australija išaugo į pramoninę šalį, o Sachalinas ir Kurilai išlieka „nelaimės salomis“?

The many centuries spent and methods used to colonise the islands have, however, made neither Sakhalin nor the Kuril Islands ‘our Australia’, though in both cases the land was first colonised by convicts at the same time. Why has the hard-labour-based Australia grown into an industrialized country, whereas Sakhalin and the Kurils remain ‘Calamity Islands’?
